Southwest, AirTran deal probable to close

U.S. antitrust enforcers won't possible object to Southwest Airlines Co's acquisition of AirTran Holdings Inc., according to the American Antitrust Institute, an antitrust research and advocacy group.

But, the deal could modify the business model of low cost airlines and Southwest's pricing strategies, the group said.

The $1.4 billion deal likely won't make resistance from antitrust officials, said Diana Moss, the institute's vice president.

AirTran is the fifth-busiest airline at Wichita Mid-Continent Airport and it's unclear precisely how the merger will have an effect on Wichita.
